Intermediate Corsetry - what to bring
Thank you for signing up for the Intermediate corset making course. All courses take place from Friday-Sunday.
Courses begin at 9.30am on Friday and finish around 5pm each day. Participants are invited to turn up from 9.00am onwards for coffee/tea.
Over this three day intermediate corsetry course we will talk about different methods of construction, make a corset toile from calico in order to go through the fitting process very thoroughly and then make an underbust corset using a very nifty construction technique used by many professionals.
The corset will be a two layer construction using coutil for the strength layer. Please bring your own fashion fabric for the top layer. This fabric should be a medium weight cotton (ie: quilting weight) or a firmish silk dupion type - ie: easy to work with. Unsuitable fabrics are chiffon, floaty silky fabrics, and velvets. Please try to avoid man made fibres such as polyester as these are very difficult to work with. You will need up to a metre depending on how wide the fabric is, and if you want to use some of it to make bias binding to finish the corset.
The workshop does not cover basic sewing skills and students should therefore be confident with a sewing machine and know how to work with fabric.
- Cotton calico for the mock-up
- Plain herringbone coutil
- Busk fastner
- Spiral and flat boning
- An eyelet kit
- Bias binding
Participants should bring:
- Measuring tape
- Sharp scissors or rotary cutters (with mat)
- Hand sewing needles
- 1m Fashion fabric (see above - please no synthetic fibres (polyester!), they are a devil to work with)
- Notpad and pen
Other specialist tools such as pliers and cutters will be available for communal use or to buy from the shop.
By the end of the course you will have learned about turn of cloth, roll pinning, enclosed welt seams, and easy ways to deal with the metal hardware in corsetry. You will feel confident about tackling different patterns and methods of corset construction, and you should take home with you the knowledge to make a beautifully constructed garment with a bespoke fit, which should last for many generations to come.
There is no need to bring a sewing machine as these are kindly provided for us by Janome UK. If you would like to bring your own, that is no problem either. Please do bring your own thread if you wish to use a colour other than black or white.
Morning and afternoon refreshments will be provided along with a light sandwich lunch (vegetarian), and possibly a cake or two ;)
Directions and recommended places to stay are on the website here.
Buying corset making supplies
If you would like to buy corsetry supplies please purchase these in advance via Sew Curvy. If you pay by Paypal I will refund your postage, if you want to pay cash on delivery, that is fine too, just pic the BACS option when paying.
I am unable to process orders while you are here
as collecting fabric and boning for potentialy 6 people is too time consuming and takes my attention away from the class.
In the meantime, if you have any queries at all, please don't hesitate to get in touch : firstname.lastname@example.org
