Tuition, materials, lunch and refreshments for 2 days
This is an intense two day express course where students will learn how to make a modern, single layer waist reducing corset based on the traditional Victorian steel boned corset.
This is an express course based on technique and we will therefore not have a day dedicated to toile making and fitting. Over the two days we will be making a complete single layer overbust corset from coutil fabric.
During the course, we will discuss corsetry in detail, including the anatomy of the traditional steel boned corset as well as the history and how they work along with the appropriate fabrics and different methods and styles of corsets and the hardware withinn them.
The corset made on this course will effectively be a toile and we will discuss altering the pattern and fitting issues during the 2 days.
By the end of the course, students will have learned how to make initial pattern adjustments, based on measurements, and then how to make a professional level, single layer mid-overbust corset with steel boning, front busk and metal eyelets.
The workshop will use the Sew Curvy Victoria pattern and the following topics will be covered :
Preparing and using coutil fabric
Inserting the busk fastener
Stitching perfect boning channels
Assembly without wrinkles
Cutting/using spiral wire boning and flat steel boning
Inserting two part eyelets
Finishing and binding the corset
Lacing the corset
The following materials are included in the price and will be supplied to each person:
Coutil corsetry fabric and binding
Split busk fastner
Two part metal eyelet kit
Overbust corset pattern
A comprehensive list of other tools and equipment that students should bring to class will be supplied via email.
Because corsetry classes take place is in a dedicated corsetry studio, there are ample opportunities to examine part made and complete corsets, different types of corsets the extensive library of corsetry and sewing books.
By the end of the weekend students will have an extremely good understanding of how to make and fit a modern steel boned corset based on Victorian and Edwardian technology, how a corset works and how to apply this knowledge to different sizes and body shapes.
The cost of the workshop includes venue hire, tuition, materials detailed above, morning and afternoon refreshments and a delicious sandwich lunch (vegetarian to cover all). Fees are non refundable but in the event of cancellation may be used towards goods or the cost of a different course or workshop during the current teaching cycle.
